Trainings & Mentorships.
Please contact Nancy Redding to be added to her list of people to contact once summer 2025 trainings are set up. Nancy will be conducting several Classroom Educator and Associates Level trainings in the summer of 2025.
The Orton-Gillingham approach is the grandfather of all programs now called structured literacy. It is an approach to teaching language skills that follows several principles; chiefly, it is structured, sequential, cumulative, and multisensory. Phonological awareness, phonics, syllables and syllable division, spelling rules, and morphology are taught explicitly. Although this approach to teaching reading and spelling is crucial for students with dyslexia, it is appropriate and encouraged for teaching reading and spelling to all students. Nancy conducts trainings which can lead to certification in Orton-Gillingham Academy for teachers/tutors who choose to participate in optional practicums. Training can also lead to CERI certification in the International Dyslexia Association.
Trainings:
Trainings might be in person or online. On-line trainings consist of webinars and quizzes which can be completed independently, and live zoom sessions daily on class days. Live trainings are five days for OGCE level and eight days for Associates level.
The Classroom Educator level is appropriate for teachers who work in schools, either in classrooms or small groups. This level requires a minimum of 30 hours of training. Nancy’s CE trainings are usually five days, for a total of 35 or 40 training hours. For more information about the Classroom Educator Certification, please look at the Orton-Gillingham Academy website under Certification.
The Associate level is appropriate both for teachers working in schools, but also those doing 1:1 work in a private setting. Associate Level trainings are generally at least eight days, consisting of the five days of Classroom Educator plus another 3 days beyond, for a total of 60+ hours.
Practicum:
At the Classroom Educator level, the practicum consists of teaching a minimum of 50 hours of OG lessons to a classroom or small group over a period of time no less than eight months. During that time, Nancy will conduct at least five observations, and mentor you through the practicum. Additionally, some readings are required. After the practicum, the teacher can apply to the Orton Gillingham Academy for certification at the Classroom Educator level.
At the Associates Level, the practicum consists of teaching a minimum of 100 hours of OG lessons. There are two options for delivery: half with a small group and half with an individual, or the entire 100 hours can be done with 1:1 tutoring. During this time, Nancy will conduct at least 10 observations, and mentor you through the practicum. Additionally, all readings from the Associates Level Reading List are required.

Cost:
Nancy’s charge is $150 per observation, payable after each observation. Additionally, scholarships may be available from Boon Philanthropy (information on Orton Academy website) or from your local IDA branch.
